After my first month

I'm 21, started at 280lb and lost 10lb so far after a month. I've always been big built but over the last year or two I've let myself go way more than I should.

I've just gone with keeping my calories capped at 1800 and filling mostly with meats (chicken is a staple), rice, potatoes, eggs, avocado (love it) and lower calorie breads. I'm surprised at how much volume I can get into 1800 cals. Completely cut out sugar sodas and replaced with mostly water but I'd estimate between 1-2 cans worth of sugar free sodas a day (usually just 1 but some days more). Sometimes (once/twice a week) I do get times where I really want something sweet and something that satisfies the fat kid in me but this is always budgeted in my daily calories and is never anything more than 200-300 cals.

I get to the gym 3 times a week and do 30 mins medium-high intensity cardio (mostly elliptical) and another 15-30 mins resistance machines (not confident enough to do real weights yet). It's been working but are there any other tips that helped people out?

Want to make sure I'm not making any bad habits and also want to make sure I'm doing this as efficiently and as effectively as possible.
