I want to share my experience with a recent trip to Orlando in case there is anyone else that is frantically trying to find measurements to gauge whether they'll fit on rides or not. I understand it's not going to help everyone but even if it helps one person, it's worth sharing. We did Universal Studios (Harry Potter!), Hollywood Studios (Star Wars!), and the water park Discovery Cove.
I was terrified and frantically Googling/YouTubing for information before our trip because I didn't want to be embarrassed in front of my boyfriend and his parents.
For the record - I never want to feel this way again at an amusement park. This experience has been more motivation to keep working towards my goal!
I do not have all of my recent measurements but I will do my best to describe in detail: 1. 52.5" at hips 2. Torrid/Layne Bryant size 18 pants, XL/16/2 shirts 3. 43" at chest 4. 6'-0" tall 5. I carry most of my weight in my stomach and thighs 6. I have been strength training for 5 months and feel like my body is changing to look more muscular/toned (still a long way to go).
Universal / Harry Potter World:
It's my understanding that Universal / Harry Potter world has made modifications in recent years to accommodate more riders of size. I was paranoid all day long but it all worked out in my favor.
Gringotts: the seat is strange - kind of a pit that your butt should sink down into but doesn't really work out if you have extra weight. The restraint is a lap bar. It almost clicked into place with minimal effort on my part but the attendant did tell me I had to get it down a little further without her assistance. I panicked because I couldn't get it on my own. My boyfriend was able to pull a little on one side while I did the other and it was fine. It was not painfully tight but also not the most comfortable experience. I was relieved to have fit and loved the ride.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey - the restraint is overhead like a typical rollercoaster. I had no issues with this ride. There are seats out front if you're worried. No one seemed to pay attention as I tried them out and there is a red light / green light system to let you know if you're good. Heads up: the platform is constantly moving while you get into your seat and strap in, so I would definitely test before risking them stopping the platform/ride. If you don't fit in the tester - I'd still wait in line because the castle is really cool!
Buckbeak ride - looks small but also no issues with the lap bar. Boyfriend and I were both able to fit in the same car.
Hagrids motorbike - this was another tight fit but I got the green light with effort. There are two types of seats: the motorbike and the side car. The motorbike is easier for riders with extra weight. I watched a YouTube video that was pretty informative. The attendant did pull me aside right before we got to the ride and made me test again (testers out front too). Same red light/ green light system and I got the green. I didn't actually get to ride because it broke down right before we got on - but I did notice that the platform seemed to keep moving as people boarded on this ride too. This is the only ride in the park with no express pass too FYI!
Hulk Rollercoaster - I fit on the regular restraints here. Again overhead restraints. They also have modified seats that have a little more room in certain rows. Same type of test seats out front. LOVED THIS RIDE!
The Hogwarts Express (train), Jurassic Park Ride, Spiderman, King Kong, and a couple of other 3D rides are also fine / no restraints.
Disney / Star Wars:
Fit on all rides at Hollywood Studios. They mentioned on their website that their rides are friendly for people that are "Pooh sized". All of the rides had a very forgiving/accomodating seatbelt. We didn't ride the rollercoasters at this park because all the lines were super long and we didn't have any fast passes.
Discovery Cove:
They have wet suits of all sizes. They also have vests if you don't feel like getting into a wetsuit. You have to wear something for safety. I wore the wetsuit for warmth because the grand reef snorkeling is in a very deep/cold tank. We didn't swim with dolphins but you'd want to for warmth with that experience as well.
I was relieved to have fit on everything we attempted. I did read that there were rides at Universal that may not have gone well (the mummy ride, RRR, and minion ride stand out in my memory but we didn't have time to get to these with all of the other awesome Harry Potter stuff).
Anyways...Best of luck - I understand your pain if you're feeling nervous!
