Hi. This is my firs time posting here and I’m here for the same reason everyone else is, obviously. I’m sure these kinds of posts are made fairly often, so I’ll try to keep it short.

I’m 24, 5’6” and weigh 221 lbs. Been really bothered by my weight and general physical appearance since I was a teen. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt comfortable in my body and I want to get to the point where I am happy with how I look. In addition, I’m getting older and I want to develop a better lifestyle before it gets harder for habits to change and before my current habits take a toll on my health.

I have been going to the gym on and off, always picking myself back up to go. I started a new job recently that has me sitting in a chair most of the time and involves me working overnight from 10 PM to 6 AM. I’ve been trying to stabilize my sleeping schedule to be from 11 AM to about 6 PM. I definitely have a window for going to the gym in the morning; I downloaded myfitnesspal to help track my calorie intake, downloaded fitbod to help customize a workout routine I can follow, and am trying to track my water consumption. I have a horrible problem with sugar that I’m trying to kick starting today, but even though I feel like I am making the right first steps, I still feel like I don’t know where to start. It’s almost overwhelming. I don’t know how many times I have done all this before only to find myself lost again.

I’ve seen a lot on here about portion control, which I want to incorporate into my lifestyle changes, but what is the best thing to refer to when it comes to portion control? What’s the best rule of thumb?

I really want to get down to 170, maybe 160. Mostly, I don’t want to feel so dissatisfied and ashamed of my body anymore. I know that is more psychological and requires other changes I need to make, but I’m ready to make a change in my life in the better. I don’t know how many times I have said this to myself, have had the same fiery motivation, only to fall flat, but I want to and need to try again.

Does anyone have any resources they’d recommed or tips for someone looking to make a fresh start on the right foot?

Edit: I forgot to mention that while my goal is to mostly slim down, I’m not really looking to get super buff or anything. Mostly I just want to be a leaner, more fit me whose body doesn’t feel like a polluted wasteland.
