I found a gym that I love!!

I have been losing weight for about two months now through diet only and wanted to step it up a notch but I found the gym a bit daunting. I have been a member of a gym before when I was in high school. I stopped going because everyone was already fit, I felt so out of place being the biggest one there every day and the staff wouldn’t even say hello. I wasn’t even at my heaviest, I was 80kg/175lbs (i wish i was back at this weight now!!). The classes there were the worst because I always felt like I was letting everyone down for being slower than them or struggling to do exercises that everyone else was powering through.

A month ago I joined a gym again because I have more confidence in myself than when I was in high school. I have moved house since then so I signed up to a different gym closer to my house, my sister also recommended this gym because the classes were great.

When i went in for my initial tour and payment plan conversation the staff were really nice which was different to my old gym. I originally thought they were being nice because they wanted my money rather than actually caring how i was on the first day!! There was also a mixture of people who had different body types from overweight people like myself to people around my goal weight and people with huge muscles.

Fast forward to today, I joined my gyms 8 week challenge and I am absolutely loving it. The staff are always happy to see everyone, they remember your name and are genuinely interested about what I’m going to do for my work out, whether it be weights, cardio or classes.

The PTs here are fantastic as well. My form wasn’t the best on one of the machines and a PT that I hadn’t seen before saw this and sat down with me for 5/10 minutes and showed me how to do it correctly even though they were about to go home. This would have never happened at my old gym!!

I had my first group workout session for the 8 week challenge, it was just a fitness test so we can measure how we have improved after the 8 weeks. I told the trainers there that I was going to struggle with a lot of the exercises and they told me it’s ok and that I can go at my own pace. I got to the lunges and I couldn’t even do 1 without wobbling all over the place so one of the trainers came over and told me to hold on to her hands and only go down half way. I ended up doing 16 in a minute which is 16 more than I thought I could do!!!

We also did planks and my previous PB was 31 seconds, today I did 39! I showed the PT (who helped me before) my diary where I am writing how long I can hold a plank each day and she said she was really proud and that I should be proud of myself, even though everyone else was lasting more than 3 minutes.

After the session was over, she chased after me and gave me a cooler bag with the gym logo on it and said that I could have it for beating my personal best time for planking.

I’ve never felt so supported in my life and if anyone here is doubting their gym like I was, I assure you that there are gyms around that are better. I used to cringe about anything gym related, now I’m excited to attend each session and want to keep pushing myself!!

Thanks for reading!!
