Unfortunately, I found out by losing my grandmothers 80+ year old vintage ring.
I woke up this morning delighted to find out I’d hit the 10lbs lost marker after starting this January. I was ecstatic! Then I found out that my ring was missing (I never take it off). I’ve searched everywhere and called stores I visited with no luck. Of course I’m really bummed about losing my grandmas ring but on the other hand, it shows that I am making progress. This is definitely not my first time losing weight, but it is the first time that I’m feeling like I’m making real lifestyle changes and not just crash dieting and burning out. Usually, I start calorie counting and restriction and working out 5 days a week and I fizzle out quickly. I’ve done CICO several times and every time I track calories in MFP, I lose weight, every time. But I realized I hate tracking calories. I’m lazy and it makes me feel overwhelmed cooking because I always want to get everything perfect and then cooking starts to feel like a hassle to me and I start to dislike the process. So this time, I decided to just make small adjustments. My ideal diet is whole food plant based. I’m still eating meat and animal by products when going out to restaurants, but at home I’m slowly making my way to WFPB. My plan is each month to remove a product from my shopping list. January I stopped buying meat and ate the rest I had at home. February, I stopped buying milk and switched to almond milk. March will probably be butter. I don’t know if I’ll ever give up cheese but I’ll take what I can get! I also started adding a ton more vegetables, beans, and just healthier foods in general to all my meals. I still eat what I want i.e. burritos, pasta but I add lots of veggies. Rice/quinoa + veggies are my go to. I also stopped buying things on I could snack on so if hungry I have to cook and if I do need something to snack on its usually nuts or a piece of fruit. I cook probably 95% of meals and go out to eat maybe twice a month. Not counting calories has made a big difference in my attitude for cooking healthy food. I’m probably not losing weight as fast but my goal is 1 lb a week and so far I’m exceeding it. I may in the future start counting calories if I’m no longer successfully eating at a deficit without counting but for now it works. For exercise I started walking to work (1 mile each way). I did that for a few weeks and then I started adding resistance training 3x a week (slowly building up the time each week). And I’ve also started running up and down stairs for 10-15 mins for a HIIT once a week. I don’t find the exercise regimen to be the hardest part personally (although I do have to convince myself every time to exercise) since I’ve been relatively active my whole life. Diet for me is really where I struggle staying consistent but so far the small changes I’ve made have been working and since I’m enjoying them, I feel these changes are going to last.
Anyways, that’s how I’ve found some success, maybe it will be helpful to others. Cheers to those trying to stick to new lifestyles changes!
