I was listening to Bill Nye’s Science Rules podcast recently and he had an episode about diet and nutrition. I don’t recall her name, but the expert on that episode had some good insights into what to eat and how to eat healthy. She was quoting someone else, who I also forget and can’t be bothered to lookup, but she said the following:
The secret to a healthy diet can be summed up in seven words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”
“Eat food.” - that means real, minimally processed foods. Not junk food. “Not too much.” - don’t over eat. Eat what you need. Most people, on average, need about 2000 calories a day from food to maintain their body weight at a healthy level. “Mostly plants.” - the majority of your calories should come from plant sources. Meat is fine, but it should not be the biggest part of your diet.
Those seven words have really stuck with me and it really is that simple. Not always easy, but simple.
