Some things I’ve learned along the way

I’ve been overweight most of my life and have lost and regained plenty of pounds over the years. In February, I found a way to eat that really works for me, and have lost 50 pounds since then. Here are a few thoughts—

First, find an eating plan that suits your lifestyle, is healthy, and is sustainable. Relying on willpower or depriving yourself might work in the short term, but if you want to keep off what you worked hard to lose, what you’ll need is a way of eating that works long term.

Second, as soon as your clothes are too big, give them away.

Third, look for validation and encouragement beyond the scale. I’ve had weeks where I was plateaued but still trusted my body. It’s never failed me, even though it sometimes had a mind of its own.

Lastly, resist the temptation to draw attention to your diet or try to convince others that you’ve found the secret. Just keep doing what you’re doing. If people notice you’re getting smaller, hooray. And if they’re curious about how you’re doing this, give a brief answer. If they want to know more, they’ll ask follow up questions.
