I recently entered onederland. I go by weekly weight averages, so the first time I saw that number on the scale it was neat, but I knew I wanted to wait for the weekly average to reflect it. Well, hooray! It now does. :)
Something that I've noticed after 7 months of effort is that motivations have to change along the way. The mind isn't static, life isn't static, and static goals can be quite brittle/hollow after a while. I feel bored with my meal planning. I feel reflexive with my workouts rather than proactive. Living for yester-me isn't enough for now-me. I find myself not looking to the future as much, partially because I have fixated so much on a milestone I crossed a week ago.
So, time to update things! If you're losing weight like I am, it may be worth revisiting your motivations every few months or when you hit milestones that are important to you.
I'll offer my own experience as a kind of example:
Example 1: Life after back surgery hurts and I'd like to feel better. I want to lose weight to lighten the load on my joints, feel more in control, and regain the physique that I lost before all this weird medical stuff started happening to me. I was about 200 pounds before the madness started. Let's go for that.
Example 2: Now that I'm at my previous weight, I'm noticing nitpicky/punitive thoughts about my body that I previously had. That's a huge bummer, but I know I can change it. I want to challenge myself to feel confident with wearing a tank top (both a mental struggle and physical). To help me with this, I'll strive to look in mirrors more and note what I like/notice in my daily gratitude journal. I'd also like to focus on working my upper body at the gym, to feel more balanced and confident. I'll focus on protein intake during my meals to help me with this. I'll revisit this when I hit 175 pounds (25 pounds away), or by May 1, whichever comes first.
Notice the shift in needs. Example 1 was quite physical. Example 2 is quite emotional/mental. Both of them intrinsic to my own life/journey, so quite personal, so there's definitely fuel to achieve them. I'm going to be more deliberate about revisiting goals like this. If anyone else has experience/stories around the shifting needs & strategies you've had as your weight has changed, I'd love to hear them. <3
