I don’t know why I never realized this before, and I feel sort of stupid now. Most pizza places have different sizes for small, medium, and large. Some larges are 12”, some 14”, some 16”, and some 28” (yes I’ve seen 28” Pizza and it’s crazy).
When I was at home, we’d eat pizza once or twice a month. Me and my brother would split a Large, and my parents would split a large. It was perfect, felt like a perfect size, I always felt full after, and my weight never changed.
I moved out, and there’s a little pizza place near where I live that I went to before the quarantine, but has now opened up again a few weeks ago. I always felt terrible eating there because they only sell plain pizza by the slice, but if you want pizza with toppings you have to order a whole pie. So I’d always end up eating a whole pie whenever I ate pizza. And who doesn’t feel kind of disgraced and disgusted after you eat an entire pie of pizza on your own.
Here’s the kicker. The large pie from home is 16”, so it has an area of 201 and I’d eat 1/2 of that. The pie I eat now is 11”, so an area of 95. So I’ve actually been eating less pizza than I used to, but felt disgusted for doing so because it seemed like more. I just came to this realization today after eating an entire pie for dinner, and it’s made me so happy.
Hopefully this serves as a reminder to people that eating is heavily psychological. Same thing with how the size of your plate affects how much food you grab and eat, eating a whole small pie can feel more filling and look worse but be better for you than eating half of a large.
